Coordinator of Children and Youth Discipleship Ministries

Basic Function

To develop and implement a comprehensive program of ministry with children and youth that helps them become mature disciples of Jesus Christ.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assess the education and formation needs for children and youth, set goals, and develop programs/activities to meet the needs/achieve the goals.
  2. Recruit, train, equip, and deploy volunteers to serve in the area of children and youth discipleship ministry.
  3. Ensure that the child protection policy of the church is observed and provide annual training for staff and volunteers.
  4. Serve as resource person for children and youth Sunday School classes.
  5. Recruit, train, and support children and youth Sunday school teachers, aides, and substitutes; and provide coaching and encouragement to strengthen volunteer teachers’ abilities.
  6. Maintain a resource center for the purpose of education and formation in conjunction with the Coordinator of Adult Discipleship.
  7. Plan, organize and direct all youth related activities.
    1. Attend all UMYF meetings.
    2. Help implement plans by ordering needed materials, scheduling speakers, handling set-up details for events, etc.
    3. Coordinate meals for youth activities beyond Wednesday Night Life.
    4. Communicate in a timely manner and as effectively as possible using all available resources (mail, email, website, bulletin, newsletter, handouts, etc.).
    5. Offer service/mission opportunities throughout the year to involve young people in missions, community service, youth service fund, work camp experiences, etc.
    6. Plan and organize Wednesday night youth activities and coordinate with other Wednesday night activities.
    7. Lead studies when requested as time permits.
    8. Develop relationships and weekly communication with youth parents.
    9. Encourage participation in district and conference youth opportunities.
  8. Coordinate the implementation of the Confirmation class experience including the annual retreat to Lake Junaluska.
  9. Communicate the plans and activities of the young people to the professional staff, Church Council, Children’s Council, Youth Task Force, and other groups within the church structure.
  10. Encourage children and youth visibility in the church through participation on committees.
  11. Work closely with the Coordinator of Adult Discipleship to develop and implement ministries with families.
  12. Prepare budget requests and provide oversight of spending in children and youth areas while communicating financial matters with children and youth leadership teams.
  13. Coordinate transportation for children and youth activities which includes reserving vans and recruiting authorized drivers.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned or in support of the program in cooperation with appropriate church members or staff.
  15. Cooperate with the Senior Pastor by performing any other duties when assigned or instructed.
  16. Participate in weekly staff meetings.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree with 5 years previous work history in the area of children and youth ministry.

Other Requirements

Demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to United Methodist Doctrine, History, and Polity.

Certification in First Aid and CPR.




Coordinator of Adult Discipleship Ministries

Basic Function

To develop and implement a comprehensive program of discipleship formation for adults that helps our congregation fulfill our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Evaluate discipleship formation needs for adults in all stages of life, and develop and implement programs to meet the identified needs utilizing lay volunteers.
  2. Expand ministries with singles, senior adults, parents, and other such groups as needs are discerned.
  3. Work closely with the Coordinator of Children and Youth Discipleship to develop and implement ministries with families having primary responsibility for this area.
  4. Develop the church’s ministry with the TTU community, giving special consideration to TTU and other college age students.
  5. Serve as resource person for all adult Sunday School classes.
  6. Recruit, train, and support adult Sunday school teachers, aides, and substitutes; and provide coaching and encouragement to strengthen volunteer teachers’ abilities.
  7. Develop and expand the opportunities for small group ministry.
  8. Develop the Wednesday Night Life program.
  9. Create opportunities for new Sunday School Classes and creation of other weekday small group studies.
  10. Order and distribute materials/curriculum for Sunday School and other classes/groups as requested (Wednesday Night Life, weekday studies/groups, etc.).
  11. Maintain a resource center for the purpose of education and formation in conjunction with the Coordinator of Children and Youth Discipleship.
  12. Maintain attendance records for adult Sunday School classes and organize publicity and registration for other education/formation events (i.e. WNL, retreat).
  13. Provide stewardship of the church’s financial resources for areas of responsibility.
  14. Coordinate the use of all audio/visual resources and equipment, and facilitate needed repairs and/or replacement.
  15. Work with the Nursery Council to hire/fire nursery staff and schedule nursery workers for church related events.
  16. Lead Bible study groups when requested.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned or in support of program in cooperation with appropriate church members or staff.
  18. Participate in weekly staff meetings.

Bachelor’s Degree

Collegiate background in Christian Education or equivalent/prior experience required.
